The State Duma will consider the issue of ranking fake news in news aggregators in October. Until this time, deputies will hold consultations on the topic with representatives of aggregators, the journalistic community and experts.
The corresponding decision of the Duma Council was reported by the press service of the lower house of parliament:
“At the Council of the State Duma, the first deputy head of the United Russia faction Andrei Isaev raised the issue of fake news, including news aggregators. It was decided to comprehensively study this issue so that during discussion and decision making it would be possible to meet with representatives of the media and, above all, the Duma pool of journalists, the expert community, news aggregators themselves and return to the discussion of this issue after all consultations in October”.
The reason for Isaev’s dissatisfaction was the preservation of the headings of publications on the Yandex.News top article by Kommersant’s article, reporting on the alleged initiative of deputies to ban the use of old cars. Later, a refutation of this information appeared, but the plot was headed by a note about the ban.
Andrei Isaev emphasized that “the deputies are concerned about the topic of fakes especially when they are already refuted, and the news continues to be in the tops.” He was supported by speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, who promised to bring the problem to the Duma Council today, August 19.
In response to the current situation, Yandex explained that the Yandex.News aggregator combines publications of the country’s largest media in its feed, while the aggregator itself does not carry out an editorial function or a fact-checking function – in accordance with the current Russian legislation, this responsibility lies with the media.
