Google announced, that started using BERT and other machine learning techniques for forming carousels with news in search results.
New carousels will appear in the “Breaking News” section. They are designed to help people easily find the best articles related to a particular topic.
Previously, when searching for information on current events in the top of search results, users saw a carousel with news publications on the topic. Now, if several subjects are connected with the search query, then Google will organize materials on separate topics, so that it will be easier for the user to understand what is most relevant for him and what story he would like to delve into.
In addition to the latest news publications, Google’s Top News carousels will also show other content that can provide more context and understanding on a particular topic.
For example, for queries such as [NASA news], results may be returned grouped by the following topics: “Five more companies joined the NASA mission,” “NASA discovered water on the moon of Jupiter,” as well as additional results under the link “Also in the news “.
Google has developed a new technology to form such carousels,
which identifies people, places, and things related to the news story, and then
establishes connections between them.
This technology allows Google to create separate groups of news articles. In her work, she also uses BERT.
This update is currently running on mobile devices for inquiries in American English. In the coming months, Google also plans to expand it into more languages and countries.
Recall that earlier this week Google announced the global launch of BERT. The company also made it clear that in all language versions of the search engine, this technology covers about 10% of queries.
